Dear Biochemists,
It is my pleasure to inform you that the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the
University of Dhaka will celebrate its 50th founding anniversary (the Golden Jubilee) in 2007. It will be a
happy occasion for all of us who have graduated from this department, the oldest one in the Sub-
Continent. To mark the Golden Jubilee, we plan to organize a day-long program that will include a rally,
scientific conference, reminiscence and a cultural show followed by dinner. The program will be held in
December 2007 (date to be announced later). We would like to publish a souvenir to commemorate the
event. Biochemists and alumni of the department from home and abroad are warmly invited to participate
in this grand occasion and make it a success.
Fellow Colleagues,
You are aware that our department has been renamed to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2001 to
give emphasis on the current trend of molecular biology research all over the world. We need to train our
young graduates to give leadership in advanced research in molecular biology as well as in clinical
biochemistry, immunology, human nutrition and other areas of biochemistry. Unfortunately, the facilities
in practical classes and research laboratories in the department are not up to the mark because of lack of
space and funds. We, the senior ex-students of the department strongly feel to improve these for our
future generation of new students.
Dear Alumni,
It is our firm belief that this has been in your head and mind to do something for our beloved department;
some of you in fact have already come forward in this regard. We have planned to create an Endowment
Fund, to be called DU-BMB Truest Fund, with a target of Tk.10,000,000 (US$ 1,67,000). A Board of
Trustees that will see how best the Fund will be invested to get a handsome annual return will govern the
DU-BMB Trust Fund. The profits from this investment will be used to uplift the standard of our research
laboratories in equipments, chemicals and the accessories up to international standard. May I take this
opportunity to invite you to join us in the creation of the DU-BMB Trust Fund. It may be noted here that
a few departments of this university have already initiated similar programs successfully. Contributing to
the DU-BMB Trust Fund will indeed provide you an opportunity to serve the department in the most
meaningful way.
Dear Philanthropists,
The Department of Biochemistry (now Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) at the University of Dhaka
was established in 1957 under the leadership of a great son of the soil Late Professor Kamaluddin Ahmad.
Thousands of biochemists graduating from this department have ever since made and are making
significant contribution to the advancement of science and scientific research at home and abroad. Your
generous contribution to the development of this historic department will be most welcome and gratefully
accepted. You are earnestly requested to become a Trustee of the DU-BMB Trust by making an
appropriate contribution (the Constitution of the Trust is available in our website at
http://bmbudhaka.net Your participation in the Golden Jubilee program of our department will
also be highly appreciated.
We look forward to receiving your contribution and cooperation.
Sincerely yours,
Laila N. Islam, Ph.D.
