Research Interests

Antibiotic resistance in the community is a growing threat particularly in developing countries. Bacteria can be resistant in their natural state or they can acquire resistance genes by mutation, expression of a latent chromosomal gene or by exchange of genetic material from other bacteria. They are a number of mechanisms by which bacteria perform their resistant activity. Among them, multidrug efflux pump is one of the common and major mechanisms. I have cloned and characterized three multidrug efflux genes from Vibrio cholerae non-01. Two of them belongs  to the MATE family and the rest one belong to ABC-type multidrug transporter family. I like to find some inhibitor(s) from the natural sources that would be a potent inhibitor of the efflux pumps.
