Overview

The Department of Biochemistry was established in 1957 under the headship of Prof. Kamaluddin Ahmad and is a component department of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.Recently it is renamed as Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It was grown to be one of the largest and most successfull departments in the subcontinent with a wide range of research interest and a commitment to excellent teaching at the post graduate level. Biochemists study the very basis of the molecular processes essential for life itself such as DNA replication, enzymatic and metabolic activity, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, the many aspects of the regulation of cellular events, toxicity-to name just a few areas.
Leading the department research and teaching activities are twenty five full time academic staffs (including a number of research fellows). We currently have sixty postgraduate students and two hundred and fifty honours students and almost twenty one general staff are engaged in the official jobs.

Our faculty members are leading authorities in their areas of expertise. Prof. Kamaluddin brought international fame for the department at the beginning. He with the help of NIH (National Institute of Health, USA) conduct national nutritional survey at 1962-1964. From this survey world is able to know about our country's malnutritional state and then Bangladeshi government took necessary steps.

In 1993 under supervision of Prof. Dr. H. K. M. Yusuf and with the help of International Council For Iodine Deficiency Disorder Survey was conducted. From that report it was seen, 70% of Bangladeshi were deficient in iodine. Then mixing iodine with salt is started. In addition to those, the faculty members and biochemists of this department founded different departments and research institutes, among them:

ˇ                     Food and Nutritional Science Institute, University of Dhaka; Biomedical Research Centre, University of Dhaka- By Prof. Dr. Kamaluddin Ahmad, Former Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.

ˇ                     Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka- Prof. Anwarul Azim Chowdhury.

ˇ                     Department of Biochemistry, University of Rajshahi- Prof. M. Qaisuddin. Former Vice Chancellor, Islamic University (IU), Kushtia, Bangladesh.

ˇ                     Department of Biochemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Late Prof. Dr. M. Hossain, Former Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU),

The faculty members and biochemist of this department were also awarded both in home and abroad.
