13th December, Saturday, 1997

Good old days in Biochemistry
By Dr. S. A. M. Khairul BasharProfessor and Chairman, Department of Biological Sciences, Southern University at Baton Rough, USA.

I am very pleased to that the Department of Biochemistry is celebrating its 40th founding anniversary. I want to extend my heartiest greetings to everyone attending this very importing meeting. I wish I were with all of you on this auspicious event. I am unable to visit Dhaka at this time due to various assingments and schedules here. But I wish all of you a grand success while celebrating the occasion. The Department of Biochemistry came into existence at a very critical time when modern biology just started to shape itself into different cutting-edge frontiers around the world. The Department became the first full-fledged Biochemistry department in the Indian subcontinent. It was a great beginning for Dhaka University, and today we very much remember those who contributed heart and soul for this great cause. My personal greetings to

Professor Kamaluddin Ahmed for his tremendous for making this a reality. My association with Biochemistry is same as my feelings and reminiscence for my family at Dhaka. I am proud to say that I belong to the first B.Sc(Hons) class at Dhaka University in 1963. I still remember those days, my friends, my teachers and the staff and everyone. It would have been pleasant today to recall those eventful days and nights at Curzon Hall. I remember my teachers, and later my colleagues, especially Dr. jabbar, Dr. Nurul Huq Khan, Dr. M Motiur Rahman and Dr. Anawarul Azim Chowdhury on this day. We very much miss Dr. Chowdhury who had been so friendly, inspiring, knowledgeable and entertaining to his students and colleagues. I have seen the emergence of Pharmacy department, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Microbiology department from Biochemistry in the Curzon Hall campus, to be more exact, from within the Biochemistry building.
My attachment with Biochemistry firstly as student, and later as faculty and

also as Chairman is definitely far-lasting. In my humble way, I want to serve my Alma-meter in whatever way it is possible. I want to encourage the budding biochemists there to let them know, the future of a bioichemist is still extremely bright; Biochemistry is now the mother of all the biochemical sciences and the sky is the limit of their development. Once again I wish all of you a very hapy anniversary, and I look forward for a productive Biochemistry department at Dhaka University. May Allah bless you all.
